National Centre for Geocomputation

Geographical Information Systems

GIS are software for the storage, manipulation, mapping and analysis of spatial data. GISc describes the fundamentals of the computational and operational issues behind the use of GIS. In essence we are involved in the science of the location. As much data is spatial in nature, and increasingly so, GIS/GISc has application within many areas and disciplines and is increasingly more prevalent in our everyday lives.

National Centre for Geocomputation

The National Centre for Geocomputation is an Science Foundation Ireland (SFI)-funded research centre at NUI Maynooth under the directorship of Prof. Stewart Fotheringham. The centre undertakes research into the fundamentals of spatial data processing and analysis and promote the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Geographical Information Science (GISc) throughout Ireland.

Information on some application and research areas we are involved in is available on the NCG website: http://ncg.nuim.ie
